Minecraft Java and Bedrock – What you need to know

So, do you want to know the differences between Minecraft Java and Bedrock? What is Minecraft Java Edition? Stay tuned – we’re got the information you need.

First of all, Minecraft is the official name of Java The original A version of the famous crafting game created by Mojang in 2009. This is the version you purchased through the Mojang website, but it is now also available through PC Game Pass. Either way, it only runs on PC. Minecraft Bedrock is a new version of the game created by Microsoft in 2017 that simultaneously replaces and integrates the console, mobile (formerly known as Pocket Edition) and Windows 10 Store versions.

That means Bedrock is available on multiple platforms and as PC players we are spoiled for choice so we can choose to play any of them. Thanks to the recently released Minecraft Launcher, we can handle both installations in one place. The relevant Minecraft versions differ greatly on which platforms to run on, however, let’s take a closer look at this.

Minecraft Bedrock vs Java Differences

Microsoft has created a handy document explaining the differences between the versions, but in summary the key differences between Minecraft Java and Bedrock are:

  • How global production and blocks are managed
  • Redstone behavior is different
  • Different Java Edition commands do not work or work differently in Bedrock
  • Officially, the console gamepad is the most common input type in Bedrock players
  • Minecraft modes and ecosystems of Minecraft skins are different
  • Hardcore and audience modes are not available in the Bedrock Edition
  • Back-end performance differences
  • Minecraft multiplayer is handled separately

The way different Minecraft versions look at modes is very important. Minecraft Java – like ‘OG’ Minecraft – has a long and multi-layered history of creative and extensive modes and Minecraft design packs, all of which you can do for free.

The Bedrock Edition still allows modes and format packs, but you should usually purchase these on platforms other than PC. In addition, the mode tools for the Bedrock edition will also have to be paid by the creators. Some popular PC modes support both versions – for free – but not all.

Minecraft Java or Bedrock multiplayer

As mentioned above, multiplayer is handled differently between the two versions of Minecraft. The important thing you need to know is – Officially – With you and those you want to play Minecraft Must use the same version to play together. This means that Java players can only play with other Java players and the same thing happens with Bedrock.

Considering that you’re limited on what you can get on other platforms, this may not sound hard, but it’s important to coordinate with your friends about what version you are using on the PC. You can only get the BedRock version through the Windows 10 Store, but both are available through PC Games Pass if you subscribe to it.

Minecraft Java and Bedrock Cross-Play

Bedrock is designed to work on multiple platforms, so you can cross play other Bedrock players with them on any platform, although the multiplayer servers in Bedrock are smaller (and newer).

There is an informal solution for this Java / Bedrock Cross-Play – GeezerMC.

This is a third-party plugin for multiplayer servers, specifically intended to allow Minecraft Bedrock players to join Minecraft Java servers. It’s a simple download, and if you follow the instructions, you do not need anything else to make it work.

Minecraft Bedrock vs Java – What do you get?

If you’re a console or mobile player or want to play primarily with console or mobile users – you really do not have much choice – you just need to use Minecraft Bedrock.

If that is not the case – and we PC players can choose the version we want – then we have to choose, but it’s very simple. The Java Edition offers many more options and utilities for PC players – Larger, older multiplayer servers, more powerful engine that does not attempt to provide more modding potential and weaker hardware.
