It seems like Mortal Kombat is about to grow into a huge movie franchise. When we look at the video game adaptations, Mortal Kombat probably had the most out of all the video game franchises. Last year, Mortal Kombat got a reboot film that received mixed reviews, but it was praised for its R rating and depiction of bloody violence.
Jeremy Slater, who recently worked on Marvel’s Disney+ series Moon Knight was hired to develop a screenplay for the reboot’s sequel. Slater recently revealed that the script is well developed and the work is halfway done. Although he didn’t give any specifics, but he confirmed something that most fans of the franchise already assumed — Johnny Cage, one of the most known Mortal Kombat characters will appear in the sequel after he was absent from the first movie, and it’s very weird for something Mortal Kombat to not feature Johnny Cage. It’s not known who will play the character in the sequel.
“Johnny Cage is one of my favorite characters, and I think there’s definitely a promise with the way the first movie ends of seeing Cole being like, ‘Okay, my next stop is to go recruit Johnny.’ So I think if he wasn’t included in the sequel at all, it would feel very strange. It’s still a little bit up in the air how much he will be included, it’s one of the things we’re currently working on. But yeah, I love Johnny and I would love to really do the definitive version, if possible, and really take everything that’s fun about that character and bring that to live-action.” — Jeremy Slater for ComicBook.com
Johnny Cage’s appearance in the sequel was teased at the end of the first movie. Sonya Blade, Cage’s love interest in the video games was played by Jessica McNamee in the last year’s reboot. Johnny Cage had previously played by Linden Ashby in the first Mortal Kombat movie adaptation back in 1995, and Chris Conrad played the character in 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which was panned by the critics and the audience.
2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot is now streaming on HBOMax, the sequel is in development.
